Bitcoin content is king: Interview with derHelper

In this interview, we talk to the speaker, YouTuber and Bitcoin content creator derHelper. We learn how he discovered Bitcoin for himself, how he integrates it into his life and what future he sees for Bitcoin. Finally, he has brought a few tips for Bitcoin newbies.

Bitcoin is a haven of peace for me. It gives you financial freedom. By that I don't mean that you are rich and have made financial arrangements. I mean a completely different kind of financial freedom.

Questions and answers

Could you tell us something about your personal journey and how you immersed yourself in the Bitcoin world?

The first contact was in 2016, when I saw Bitcoin in a Galileo report on television. They were a few computer nerds who used an unbelievable amount of electricity for mining in their cellars and that this was harmful to the environment. Iota (an altcoin/shitcoin) was also touted as an environmentally friendly German alternative (lol xD). At that point I was still a student and therefore lost sight of it again.

After a painful shitcoin phase in 2017 with huge losses, thanks to Roman Reher, the block trainer, I understood the genius of Bitcoin in 2020 and was on fire from then on. I even read a book (the Bitcoin Standard), which was completely unthinkable before, because reading books was the last thing I did at that time, thanks to school.

Like every Bitcoiner in its initial phase, there was a great urge to talk about Bitcoin, which is why I confronted my environment with it. In 2021, the association “Twenty-One” called for YouTube videos for their channel, which I gratefully accepted.

In 2023 I started my own YouTube channel, so that 24 videos have now been created and I was invited to a few lectures in the DACH region. A request from “Bitcoin in the Bundestag” was also there, which surprised me a lot. I mean, I'm just making a few YouTube videos! haha:D

I've fallen completely down the rabbit hole for a good 4 years and spend several hours working intensively with Bitcoin every day. It's been an incredibly great trip so far, which is just really picking up steam! \ ^o^/

What significance does Bitcoin have for you personally and what benefits do you see in it for society?

Bitcoin is a haven of peace for me. It gives you financial freedom. By that I don't mean that you are rich and have made financial arrangements. I mean a completely different kind of financial freedom. Thanks to Bitcoin, for the first time in human history, you have the opportunity to hold money, which no one can dilute from you by printing money AND no one can take away from you if you engage in self-custody. This is absolute financial freedom and creates peace of mind, as you know that you own something that really belongs to you. Bitcoin is completely redefining ownership! You can suddenly save for the long term and the future therefore appears much more optimistic and secure.

This also has an effect on society over time. If saving is possible, you can save back on a house, start a family and build something for the next generation. Due to the fact that it is not possible to print money, the Cantillon effect does not exist, so that large companies are suddenly exposed to market pressure and go bankrupt if they make wrong decisions. In other words, the rich get poorer over time and the poor get richer, as everyone has to play by the same fair rules. And all thanks to the free market and without government intervention!

Misuse of houses as a store of value is no longer necessary thanks to Bitcoin, as Bitcoin is scarcer, fungible and easier to transport and hold. Bitcoin is thus reducing the housing shortage.

All of this means that social problems are declining. Money is the foundation of a society. If this is unstable, as is currently the case with our fiat money, society is also unstable. Bitcoin seals the cracks, strengthens the foundation with steel girders and thus makes it possible to build a high culture of unprecedented scale!

You are part of it yourself, how have you experienced the development of the Bitcoin community in the DACH region in recent years?

The development of the Bitcoin community in the DACH region is impressive. Countless meetups in many cities, many events and events have sprouted like mushrooms in recent years. Some stores near me are already accepting Bitcoin. The grassroots movement is gaining momentum.

As a German-speaking community, we can be very proud of ourselves. In terms of number of inhabitants, we are the strongest community in the world and operate the most nodes even with over 10,000 nodes. I'm grateful to be able to do my part.

Can you tell us more about your content and projects on YouTube?

I mainly run a YouTube channel (derHelper), where I upload instructional and educational videos. They are timeless videos that you can still watch in a few years. I very rarely create content about the price or hype topics.

To contact and exchange ideas with the community, I run an X account on which I regularly post infographics, Bitcoin facts, but also memes.

How do you deal with Bitcoin's volatility and which strategies do you recommend to others?

I'm not talking about my portfolio. However, I am happy to make recommendations (attention: no financial advice!) :

Have enough fiat money in your bank account that you can pay all your bills without stress. Volatility is very painful in the first few years, as a loss of purchasing power of over 50 percent is very painful at times. If you hold Bitcoin for more than four years, you've always been in the plus historically. A long time horizon is therefore very important. Run a savings plan and don't go crazy about the price. Remember your UTXO management. I made a video about this: The 1000€ TRAP! 😨 - UTXO MANAGEMENT explained!

How did you integrate Bitcoin into your life?

One word: complete. I work (part time) in the Bitcoin sector, pay in Bitcoin, have many Bitcoin friends and deal with the topic almost around the clock.

What role does education play in the Bitcoin community and how do you contribute to it, for example through the “rabbit hole” you have created?

Education without images does not educate.

A complex topic like Bitcoin can only be understood if it is explained in easy-to-understand language and with simple images/graphics. That is exactly why I have set myself the task of taking this to the extreme.

With the Bitcoin rabbit hole image (https://portal.einundzwanzig.space/kaninchenbau?l=de), which includes over 50 individual topics and over 100 links to podcasts, articles and videos, I tried to present the complexity of Bitcoin and create a collection of entry-level content. Everyone learns in a different way. I am therefore grateful that there are now a variety of content creators in German-speaking countries and that I can do my part.

What are your thoughts on the regulatory development of Bitcoin worldwide? Do you still see a positive result in game theory in the long term?

Bitcoin is seen as an attack on fiat currencies and thus the government's money-printing privilege. It is therefore no wonder that the Fiat system is trying to regulate Bitcoin. This takes the form of KYC requirements that every company must know its customers in full with their name, address and ID.

I also expect that paying with Bitcoin will become increasingly difficult. This control and surveillance of the citizen will last for some time, but not forever. Bitcoin is a Trojan horse. States think they can regulate Bitcoin. In reality, Bitcoin regulates states. More and more people, companies and pension funds are saving in Bitcoin and are thus depriving the state of the ability to print money.

Over time, states are also forced to hold Bitcoin in order to maintain their sovereignty in international trade. First signs can be seen in El Salvador and recently in the USA (Trump speech in Nashville). Because of the game theory that states have an incentive to accumulate Bitcoin, they involuntarily give up the privilege of printing money. They must therefore now deal efficiently with taxes again. Monitoring citizens with KYC measures is too uneconomical to maintain them in the long term. So I expect something like that to be abandoned over time.

My prediction is that we will use Bitcoin as a store of value for the next 10-20 years and only then really as a medium of exchange.

Can you give us insights into your future projects and plans? When comes after”Why Bitcoin is important to you” The next hit from Helper?

My main focus is currently on creating instructional videos, as in my opinion this is not yet sufficiently covered by other content creators. As a community, we praise Bitcoin to the skies, but when it comes to really using it, professional instructional videos are still missing or it is said that it is still too complicated. Example: Fullnode, UTXO Management, Lightning, etc.

Another “Mindblow” video in the style of “Why Bitcoin is important to you” really appeals to me and, as always, I have too many ideas and too little time, as such a video easily takes 100+ hours. In the words of Christine Lagarde: “It will come...”. I think I'll start doing this at the end of the year. It's just a question of blocks;)

What advice would you give someone who is just starting to learn about Bitcoin?

1. Deal with fiat money. Only when you understand the problem of why our fiat money (the euro) is unstable money and this is causing current social problems can you understand why Bitcoin is the solution to this.

2. Try to find Bitcoin's fault and act according to the motto: “Don't trust, verify!” Bitcoin may seem flawed at first glance because it consumes too much power, is too slow and has hardly any functions. But if you look deeper into the topic, you can see that exactly this serves a very specific purpose, why Bitcoin is the way it is.

3. Be sure to look at all areas that touch Bitcoin. If you're a computer scientist, you'll have to look at physics, monetary history, economics (Austrian School) and mathematics. If you are an engineer, you need to study other areas. Take a look at my Bitcoin rabbit hole picture: https://portal.einundzwanzig.space/kaninchenbau?l=de

Happy exploring the individual caves! \ ^o^/
