The idea behind Nerdminer: Interview with Julius Thiele

In this post, we talk to the Bitcoin educator and co-founder of Nerdminer, Julius Thiele. We learn more about the characteristics and goals of the “chimpanzee-friendly” home miner and gain insights into the interplay of Bitcoin mining and renewable energy.

“Nerdminer is an education product. Learning-by-doing, plug and play, testing and gaining initial experience. Understanding concepts such as decentralization, proof of work, renewable energy, hashrate, and transaction processing.”

Questions & answers

Julius, what inspired you to found Nerdminer?

Nerdminer.de was created out of pure passion. The passion for Bitcoin mining had already developed over the years. When we assembled the first Nerdminers, we quickly realized that this was the tool we were looking for to make Bitcoin as easy as possible to understand. Anyone who has been in the Bitcoin space for a little longer knows that two camps are quickly created. There are those who are already highly trained and have already done the “proof of work” and those who feel uncomfortable, uncertain and don't know exactly where to start. Since learning-by-doing often leads to significantly faster results compared to theoretical learning, we launched our first landing page with enthusiasm and joy to find out whether the market would also show such enthusiasm for the little Nerdminers. It quickly became apparent that we were not the only ones who enjoyed it. Since then, we've been able to introduce hundreds of people to Bitcoin in a fun way. The motto is “chimpanzee-friendly.” Bitcoin stands for inclusion. For this reason, we had found the perfect tool to make the barrier to entry into the “Bitcoin-Rabbit Hole” as low and at the same time as efficient as possible.

Nerdminers are an open-source project, right? How did you manage to derive a business model from this?

That's right, Nerdminer is an open-source project. Someone named BitMaker wrote the necessary software for it and made it freely available to everyone on the Internet. I would like to take this opportunity to thank BitMaker for their excellent work. We work closely with him. We quickly realized that open source doesn't mean that everyone can actually use such software. Not everyone knows how to download the necessary software from GitHub, as well as get and manufacture the individual components of the Nerdminer to build it themselves. Another disadvantage is the lack of customer service when questions arise. We quickly recognized this and set ourselves the task of offering not only an optimized product tailored to the customer but also an above-average customer service. At the time of this interview, just under 2% worldwide are actively using Bitcoin. This means that there are many questions from the other 98% that need to be answered. With Nerdminer.de, we would like to do our part here.

How likely is it to find a block with it? Similar to the lottery? And is that even the goal?

As a rough rule of thumb, the more energy flows through a miner into the Bitcoin network, the higher is the chance of finding a valid Bitcoin block and currently receiving 3.125 Bitcoin. It is therefore a very fair system. More work done means a higher chance of being rewarded. Of course, Bitcoin miners are also becoming more and more efficient, so this should only be regarded as a rough rule of thumb. The Nerdminer consumes around 1.5 watts, which means the equivalent of around 5€ of electricity costs per year. Such low computing power is therefore an education product. Learning-by-doing, plug and play, testing and gain initial experience. Understand relationships such as decentralization, proof of work, renewable energy, hashrate, and transaction processing. However, there are also other Bitcoin miners for home use in our shop, such as the recently launched NerdAxe. With its 500 GH/s ≈ 6.5 million times stronger than a Nerdminer with ≈ 78kH/s, it makes it possible to find a valid Bitcoin block with a chance of 1:8.5 million per day. Only 3 weeks ago, a valid block was found with such computing power and the lucky owner was able to enjoy 3,125 Bitcoin.

What were the biggest challenges when setting up your own company?

We are still at the very beginning of our small company. I don't think there is one major challenge that needs to be overcome. Many small steps in the right direction may one day lead to something bigger that helps many people understand Bitcoin better and that we would like to look back on with pride in a few years.

How do you ensure that even users without previous technical knowledge can mine without any problems?

We usually respond to incoming emails within 24 hours, can be reached by phone and have almost 200 learning videos online on social media. We are happy to take our time and also answer questions in addition to nerdminers. As described at the beginning, Bitcoin stands for inclusion. This is what we want to stand for as a company, in order to pick up and educate everyone in the best possible way.

What role does the community play for Nerdminer.de and how do you promote exchange with users?

In my opinion, Nerdminer.de is a community project. It was created from the community for the community. We are always happy to meet our community at events such as BTCPrag, Les femmes Orange, the Blocktrainer event and more. Social media also offers a great way to reach as many people as possible and to constantly exchange ideas. If I may give you a tip, it is using social media by creating value. This white spirit creates trust and a close connection to the community.

Are there any future updates or new products that you are planning for the Nerdminer?

True to the motto “Standstill is a step backwards”, we have already expanded our shop with several products since our launch on 6/6/2023. The latest product is the powerful NerdAxe, which already inspires many of our customers. Viewed from the outside, Bitcoin is a “new” technology that is only spreading very slowly in the world. Many observers and critics are uncertain whether this technology will ever be used. However, as soon as you take a closer look at the Bitcoin space, you can see the rapid rate at which this disruptive invention/discovery is spreading to all corners of our world.

Which trends in home mining do you think are particularly promising?

In my opinion, many do not yet recognize the connection between Bitcoin mining and renewable energy. German taxpayers are currently paying just under 1 billion euros per year, as we temporarily have too much electricity in Germany. At a frequency of over 52 Hertz, power plants that generate electricity must be shut down, otherwise the power grid will be overloaded. This shutdown is associated with high costs and is usually a result of renewable energy sources, as supply and demand cannot always be perfectly timed. The sun and wind cannot be switched off if we humans have no temporary demand for electricity. The surplus electricity is currently often sold abroad at negative prices in order to buy it back at a higher price at a later date. Some people could claim that the current procedure is like a “money-destroying machine.” In the future, I think, we will be able to observe step-by-step and household after household how the surplus electricity from our own PV plant is being used to profitably mine Bitcoin instead of feeding in the electricity. This is possible with a NerdAxe but also with larger Bitcoin miners. Thinking a few years into the future, entire countries will stabilize their power grid with Bitcoin miners and thus relieve taxpayers, as is already the case in Texas today.

Are there any particular success stories or interesting use cases that you can share with us?

Since we have only been around since 6/6/2023, we are still in the middle of the start-up phase of our company and welcome everyone who would like to join us on this exciting journey. I wouldn't have thought it possible to be at this point today and conduct such an interview 1 year ago. We've now helped hundreds of people understand Bitcoin better and are excited to work on this project every day.

What are your long-term goals for Nerdminer?

To make Bitcoin mining understandable in any form (“chimpanzee-friendly”) and accessible to everyone.
